FAQs on copyrights, permissions, and licensing

I enjoy collaborating with publishers, brands, makers, and creators to produce captivating projects. Everything from book covers to album art, films, game art, websites, logos, merchandise, etc. but only with my permission and with specific written agreements regarding fair use of my artwork. I stipulate some specific uses below.

Below is information about how you may or may not use my art. If you have any doubts or questions regarding your intended use, please do get in touch so that we can collaborate on a solution that works for both of us.

Image Use

All art created by Mary A. Planding is protected by national and international copyright laws, including The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).  Please respect the intent of these laws, which enable every artist's ongoing development. All rights are reserved, worldwide. Questions? Get in touch.



Under the following conditions and for no fee, you may use images of my artwork in your workshop or lecture in a slide deck such as PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides, on a videoconference / webinar service or in person PROVIDED that you verbally and visually give credit for each image as  "Artwork by Mary Planding" and show an active hyperlink to my website address:  "" as the image of my artwork is being displayed or discussed.

Your request must be in writing and if granted, I will provide images for this one-time use. The image(s) may ONLY be used for the purpose of this one lecture or workshop. Flyers, photocopies, photographs, or reproductions of any kind are NOT permitted for any use whether educational, non-profit, or commercial.


You are permitted to use ONE image on your personal (non-commercial) web site with the following stipulations:  

  • Images may NOT be used on websites that I deem inappropriate.
  • Images may NOT be modified, colored, animated, adapted, collaged, used as a graphic design element, or altered in any way. 
  •  A live link to “” must be visible WITH the image and hyperlinked (with follow).
  • The image used must be no larger than 400 pixels (3 inches) in either dimension at 72 dpi.
  • My art work may NOT be used on the homepage nor be used as a background, cropped, or otherwise presented in a manner that obscures the entire image in any way.
  • Images may NOT be used on websites that I deem inappropriate. Images may NOT be modified, colored, animated, adapted, collaged, used as a graphic design element, or altered in any way.

You are permitted to share images on your personal (non-commercial) social media portal with the following stipulations:

  • Images may NOT be used as backgrounds, cropped, or otherwise presented in a manner that obscures the entire image in any way. Images may NOT be used on websites I deem inappropriate.
  • Images may NOT have URLs not associated with Mary Planding or text overlaid on top of them in a way that obscures the image.
  • Images may NOT be modified, colored, animated, adapted, collaged, used as a graphic design element, or altered in any way.

Because using my art would imply a tacit endorsement, reproduction rights are reserved for projects that benefit me and/or I specifically endorses.

  • I do NOT grant permission or sell reproduction rights for the use of my art on collateral material such as brochures, business cards, pamphlets, or fliers that promote a private practice of any kind, unless otherwise agreed upon with a licensing contract and receipt of payment. 
  • Permission is NOT granted for reproduction rights for use in self-published books, workbooks or CDs, unless otherwise agreed upon with a licensing contract and receipt of payment. 
I do NOT give permission to reproduce my artwork for the following: 
  • No photographed or Xerox-type copies whatsoever.
  • No blotter art.
  • No greeting cards, posters, coasters, or any other print or digital merchandise.
  • No device "wallpaper" or virtual backgrounds.
  • No party flyers.
  • No personal business promotion. This includes business cards, flyers, brochures, web sites, etc.
  • No projections at parties or events without approval.
  • My art may NOT be collaged, customized, copied, adapted, incorporated, altered digitally or otherwise, or used within another work of art. 
  • I do NOT give permission to use my artwork within another artist's work.
