Every year when I lived in California, I would take at least one day a week and search for painting locations, and inspiration. One of my favorite treks is following Highway 1 south along the coast from Santa Cruz through Big Sur, down to Gorda. I'd meander along, stopping to take photos. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend. The coast is always an inspirational journey because of all the "eye-candy." When we could stop to paint en plein air, we would. Often though, we would have to settle for taking photos because the cliffs are so steep and the road so narrow.

One day we were coasting along when up ahead I could see this huge expanse of poppies just blooming. We managed to find a safe place to pull out, and clambered over the guard rail and made our way into that field. Squatting down, we were surrounded by poppies and bees and butterflies who were gorging themselves on the nectar. Thankfully we didn't annoy the bees, and were able to get several amazing close ups of these poppies with the ocean, waves, beach, and cliffs in the distance. It was breathtaking. Neither of us wanted to leave. I could have stayed there and drunk in all the sunshine forever.

Point Lobos is one of my most favorite spots in the whole world. Come spring, as the poppies begin to appear and spread like a carpet, it's simply irresistible.

Painting en plain air along the coast is always challenging because of the strong winds. This particular day I was taking photographs only because I had very limited time and so this was done back in my studio. But every time I paint one of my coastal scenes, I am transported back to the shore, with the wind in my hair, hearing the waves crash in the distance, with seabirds flying and squawking. I inhale deeply and imagine smelling that invigorating sea air as I watch the poppies dance onto my canvas.
