2022, Juried Show, Red Rock Pastel Society of Nevada
This was a spot hidden off the main road, behind a residential area in Sedona. Exploring here is mystical, magical, and simply amazing. Everywhere you turn, there's something gorgeous to feast your eyes upon.
As I was driving cross-country awhile back, I stopped here for several days (would that it could have been weeks!) to grab as many photos as I could of the different rock formations at different times of day. I painted this scene from a photo I took late in the morning on a beautiful sunny day in September, where human civilization seemed to have disappeared.
It was a wild and beautiful spot. As I set up to paint that day, I was enchanted by how quiet it was. Soft sounds of birds chirping, just the tiniest bit of a breeze, with chipmunks and squirrels bouncing around curious as to what I was doing. No cars, no music blaring, no human sounds of any kind. It was as though I was transported to another place and time. Sedona has that effect on me. This isn't the painting I did at that time (it's long since been sold). But I came across this view in my files and couldn't resist painting it anew, with fresh eyes, and much gratitude.
